Abstract:The link between the Labour market and education constitutes a basic
condition not only for the professional career placement of graduates, but also
for the competitiveness amongst enterprises and the growth of the economy in
general. The tourism sector in Greece constitutes an important sector for
employment and regional development.
Public Technological Educational Institutes have hitherto played a leading
role in the education of tourism business administration in Greece, aiming to
prepare proficient executives for the specific sector.
In the present article, the results of research that took place in 2009, in the
departments of Tourism enterprises at the Technological Educational Institute in
Larissa and in Heraklion, are presented. The location of these two Departments is very different regarding the tourist development and tourism infrastructures in
each region. The scope of the research was to record graduate employability
prospects in the tourism market, and also to identify the work placement
problems and opportunities of the respective graduates.
The parameters individually examined are the employability of graduates,
the types of professions, career preferences, graduate mobility, problems during
placement and other parameters concerning differences between the two
departments.
