heal.abstract Background: International literature review has shown that intrahospital transports are not always performed safely and are very often accompanied by serious complications. The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency of interruption of the applied treatment during transport of non‐ICU patients. Method and Material: It was an observational study consisted of 40 patients hospitalized in an Internal Medicine Unit, of a large general hospital in Athens, undergoing an intrahospital transport for diagnostic tests. Data collection took place from October 2009 to March 2010, using an appropriately configured recording data form that was created by researches according to international literature, and was completed during each intrahospital transport. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS v. 16.0, employing the statistical methods x2 test and t‐ test. The statistical significance level was defined as p<0.05. Results: In 52.5% of patients oxygen therapy was interrupted, while in 72.5% of patients intravenous treatment was interrupted, prior to transport. Only in 42.5% of patients a registered nurse or a doctor evaluated their health condition before transport. A statistically significant increase of breath frequency (p <0.001) and reduce of oxygen saturation (p <0.001) after transport in patients who were transported without oxygen supply was also found. Conclusions: Oxygen therapy and continuous intravenous treatment are very often interrupted in patients who undergo an intrahospital transport and serious complications may occur. Therefore, the creation and implementation of a specific protocol for intrahospital transports is critically important, as well as the training and education of the personnel, in order intrahospital transports to be performed with maximum safety for patients. en
