heal.abstract | An experimental approach to the prebreakdown phenomena in a model of a solid-liquid dielectric, under the application of high DC voltage at room temperature, is performed. The resulting partial discharges are detected and measured. The polymeric solid insulating materials are immersed in transformer oil. The stressed materials are prepared in disk form with a thickness of 1 mm and 2 mm. A tip-plane electrode assembly is used to simulate the most adverse cases met in practice (maximum field nonhomogeneity). The total width of the potential steps across the samples owing to the presence of partial discharges is specified in relation to the peak value of the applied DC voltage or the corresponding electric field F. In addition, the total electric charge flow through the samples is measured. The first measurements are taken at the instant when partial discharges started out, and then the measuring procedure continued, increasing the voltage 1 kV at a time. The duration of the repeated voltage applications was 2, 5, and 10 minutes. A great number of measurements were taken, and the experimental data were processed by the use of specific software. The results show that impact ionization takes place in the prebreakdown stages. | en |
