This paper refers to the experimental application of James Watt’s copy press method, aiming to the “interpretation” of the morphological characteristics of authentic copy letters which have been studied by using non destructive techniques. Taking copies using materials, equipment and alternative dampening methods referred in the bibliography, was the principle object of the experiments. The results led to the assessment and determination of the materials and humidification techniques applicable for the copy press process using modern materials. The properties of the copy inks and papers, the characteristic of the copies and the parameters influencing their quality are thoroughly described. The results obtained confirmed and documented the observations recorded in the authentic material and could be used as a tool towards the evaluation of the condition of the copy books found in the archives
