heal.abstract The present essay has as its main goal to present the Historic and Ethnographic Art Museum of Orestiada, a small town in Northern Greece, and its ethnographic and ecclesiastical collections. The study reffers to a local Ethnographic Art museum that houses objects of the culture of Adrianoupoli and Karagats in Turkey, locations which the majority of Orestiada’s population descents from. The foundation of the Museum, the concentration, conservation, stores and display of a large number of rare and emotionally valuable objects consist a significant contribution to the preservation of the cultural heritage and history of Eastern Thrace. The collections of the Historic and Ethnographic Art Museum of Orestiada include: Photographic and archival materials, publications and books • Material documentsof the trade and the traditional proffesions • Agricultural tools • Furnitures and odjects of domestic use • Musical instruments • Icons • Ecclesiastical relics from churches of Eastern Thrace • Traditional costumes • Weaving tools The present study is developed in four parts and includes the specific environmental condition in which the above mentioned collections are stored and displayed without the suitable museum cases and stable environmental conditions, the museum’s working weakness, the specific architectural and design problems, as well as suggestions for technical improvements that will effect the future operation and viability of the Museum. The study was based on in situ research and inventory of the collection’s object, the state of preservation of artifacts, the methodical control and measurments, the building and inner exhibit and storage spaces on the condaction of a series of interviews, which include detailed questionaire, with the Museum’s stuff and on researching the Museum’s archival materials along with the related bibliography. The first part there is a presentation of the historical background of the Museum, its collections and the object’s origin. In the second part a detailed thematical inventory and documentation of the objects, based on the international Object ID system which helps trace their history and nature, the materials used in their creation and their existing state of preservation. In the third part the present state of the Museum’s building facilities and the environmental conditions is analyzed as well as the condition under which the objects are exhibited and stored. In the same part the various materials used in the creation of the artifacts and the rates of destruction of these objects are examined and combined with the results of the methodical measurments of the local climate and the indoor climate in the Museum. The results of the temperature and relative humidity measurments are presented in the form of the tables, with special emphasis given on the range of the relative humidity on monthly and daily bases. On occasion of the acquirement of the museum’s new building facilities, in the fourth part certain suggestions are presented concerning the improvement of the present condition, the shaping of the building’s facade and inner spaces as well as suggestions that are aiming at the improvement of the existing environmental conditions. Special emphasis is given on the suggestions concerning the creation of a new storing facilities that will house, the constantly increasing in number of objects, collection of the Museum and at the same time keep the required specifications of preventive conservation. In this part there are presented solutions, drawings, architectual plans, photographs and general rules of display and storage especially for the sensitive objects of this ethnographic art collection. For the realization of the suggested short and long-term improvements and the future progress of the Museum the financial status of the Museum was taken under consideration. en
