Abstract:The aim of the present study was to examine the dependence on nicotine over a sample of employees working in Public Hospitals that operate within the Greek National Heath System.
The distribution and collection of the questionnaire took place during the period between August and September 2007 after obtaining the consent of the hospital authority.
The Fagerstrom Tolerance Questionnaire (FTQ) was used to estimate the degree of nicotine dependence to employees working in hospitals.
According to FTQ results the 62% had a degree of Low-moderate dependence from the sample and the 38% were high nicotine depended.
For the statistical analysis of the data the method of linear regression and analysis of variance was used.
The data analysis pointed the following results:
• Men and women had the same degree of nicotine dependence.
• The category of the divorcee had higher degree of dependence compare to the married and singles showing a average of high degree of dependence.
• The technical staff had the highest degree of nicotine dependence showing an average of high degree of dependence whereas the lowest degree of dependence had the employees who were graduated from the Creek Technical College of Higher Education.
• Finally the degree of dependence is reducing with the age and increasing with the years of smoking.
