heal.abstract	The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of citizens towards patients with mental diseases in order to assess the social stigma of mental illness. Method: The study sample consisted of 1601 Greek citizens between 18 and 65 years of age, 626 males and 975 females. Among the participants 955 were inhabitants of Athens and the rest came from other parts of Greece. They all had to complete a questionnaire with 26 closed-ended questions. Results: The majority of the participants believed that patients with a psychiatric disease could be cured (jp<0,001). Participants aged 27 to 40 years reported that they would accept a psychiatric patient in their workplace as well as in their social circle (p<0,001].MaIes were less willing to accept services from these patients because they could not trust them (p<0,001). Inhabitants of the provinces considered the existence of a mental disease as a reasonable cause for divorce (p<0,001]. The higher the educational level of the participants, the higher the percentage of positive responses, that stated that these patients can be benefited by receiving an education and obtaining a job (p<0,001). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that nowadays there is a more positive view towards patients with mental diseases, but when it comes to using their services at a more personal level, participants tended to be more reserved.	en
