Thought local sites in Greece, like exhibitions depending on libraries and archives play a significant role in the maintenance and transmission of cultural heritage, they still have not gained the proper attention and consideration by the museum studies. This essay provides these organisms with a combinational approach, by defining them not only from the perspective of museology but also from the relative legislation in force and deals subsequently with two cases: a local German library that is actually a museum and a Greek one that holds simply a small exhibition. Furthermore, it assesses their function on the grounds of today's demands of the museum practice. The results of this comparison show how the particular “museum” organizations contribute to the development of the local community in various ways, although there is still room for the further development of various sections of their function. From this point of view, their role in the local communities has to be encouraged and the information provided concerning their museum character should be increased.
