heal.abstract | Background: Childhood obesity and eating disorders are growing public health problems in the developed world. This study examined dieting behaviour and its relationships to socioedemographic profile, body weight, eating patterns and physical activity among students who participated in a cross-sectional study in Athens, Greece. Methods: During spring 2003, data on diet, physical activity and anthropometric characteristics were obtained from 633 students aged 10-12 years old (50% boys, 50% girls) of 11 schools in the greater Athens area. Multivariate logistic regression was used to study the association between dieting behaviour as the dependent variable and sociodemographic profile, body weight, eating patterns and physical activity as predictor variables. Results: The probability of attempted weight loss through dieting was significantly higher among overweight students (1.34; 1.26 to 1.43; P < 10-3) and significantly higher among girls than among boys (1.63; 1.06 to 2.50; P=0.027). Reported physical activity (per 1.5 hours per day) or patent inactivity, operationalized as time spent watching television or working/playing with the computer (per 1.5 hours per day) were unrelated to dieting behaviour (1.03; 0.90 to 1.18; P=0.627) and (1.06; 0.93 to 1.21; P=0.417), respectively. Composition of diet was unrelated to dieting but the daily number of eating occasions, controlling for total energy intake, was significantly inversely associated to dieting behaviour (0.65; 0.49-0.85; P=0.001). Conclusion: Children are frequently concerned about their body weight and weight reduction efforts are common among overweight Greek, 10-12 years old, primary school children. Family, school and community-based programs are needed to help children adopt healthy eating and exercising practices. | en |
