Having briefly surveyed the history of the Hospitallers as well as the political situation in the Aegean, the present paper attempts to trace the establishment and the functioning of the early warning system of the Knights of St. John built up on the islands of the Dodecanese from the early fourteenth up to the beginning of the sixteenth century.
