heal.abstract	The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of early enteral nutrition (E.E.N.) in multiple trauma patients, in association with their posttraumatic nutritional state and their immunological response. Patients with more than two traumas, who were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of the General State Hospital of Athens K.A.T, over a 3-year period, were included in our study. A nutritional support protocol was followed that included E.E.N within the first two days via naso-gastric tube and administration of nutritional formulas of different nutritional value, according to each patient needs and tolerance: (a) low kcal value 0.5 kcal/ml with N 2 gm%; (b) standard value 1 kcal/ml with N 4gm% and (c) high kcal value 1.5 kcal/ml with N 6gm % were administered to sample patients. The following markers were used for assessing the effect of E.E.N: total serum proteins, serum albumin, serum globulin, absolute number of lymphocytes, immunoglobulin IgA, IgM, IgG, serum iron (Fe) and Total Iron Binding Capacity (T.I.B.C.). Blood samples were collected from each patient, the first day of admission, the 8th day and the 15th day, for the measurement of the nutritional markers. Data were collected on a specially designed assessment chart. Statistical analysis followed, for the evaluation of the results. 35 patients with ages ranging between 15-83 (mean 40.2±18.6 years) were studied. Between the 1st and 3rd measurements the results were as follows: total proteins mean values increased significantly from 5.39 to 6.01 mg/dl (p<0.001); serum albumin presented a small change from 3.06 to 2.97 mg/dl (p=0.350); serum globulin increased significantly from 2.37 to 2.98 mg/dl (p<0.001); Fe from 49.67 to 53.33 μgr/L; TIBC from 48.3 to 48 μgr/L. There were no significant changes in the absolute number of lymphocytes nor to immunoglobulin, IgM, IgA. IgG increased significantly from 1270.8 to 1495.4 mg/dl (p<0.017). Our results demonstrated that early enteral nutrition had a positive effect in multiple trauma patients, it provided optimal preservation of the nutritional state of the patients and maintained the nutritional markers in normal value.	en
