heal.abstract The primary aim of this book is to provide specialists who are interested in treating stuttering with all the available information in the field and to encourage them to think critically about the theoretical background that should guide the choice and implementation of any treatment method. In the first part of this book, the nature of stuttering is initially described and the trajectory of several scientific efforts for the understanding and treatment of stuttering are then presented. In the second part, the available theoretical models about the etiology of stuttering and the most prominent scientific views from the recent literature are presented. Furthermore, the \"Model of Dysfunctional Beliefs\" is proposed by the authors as a promising theoretical perspective for the understanding of stuttering. This model is based on the synthesis of evidence from: a) the current and best documented etiological models regarding stuttering, and b) the research studies that have been conducted throughout the world within centuries. In the third part, several case studies of children and adolescents with stuttering are presented and procedures and material regarding the assessment of stuttering are proposed, enhancing the practical utility of the book. In the fourth and last part of the book, after a brief history, the prevailing treatment methods about stuttering are presented and the \"multi-level approach\" is proposed by the authors as an effective intervention framework. This approach is basically developed from the \"Model of Dysfunctional Beliefs\" and can be considered in the broader framework of cognitive-behavioural theories, mainly social learning and self-efficacy theories. As, in the majority of cases, the onset of stuttering is located during the preschool years, this book is mainly oriented towards the manifestations of stuttering in children and adolescents and towards treatment methods that are specifically used with these age groups. en
